Lately, I’ve been thinking about what it means to “live a life you don’t need a vacation from“. I can’t say that I take vacation to get away from something, for that break. Sure, that’s part of it but not the driving force behind my need to get away.

Like most of us, I have a full-time job. No, it’s not this blog or my travel writing. That’s for pleasure. And while I’d choose retirement over 9 to 5 any day, it’s not something I need a vacation from.

So I can’t really say I need a vacation from my life.

I just love to travel. And I grew up with change. I crave it. I love to see and experience new things and places. Vacation gives me that opportunity.

So what does “live a life you don’t need a vacation from” mean to me?

Maybe it’s not about needing a vacation from something but looking at me.

I have always loved “Vacation Tammy” better than “At Home Tammy”. Vacation Tammy is the Tammy I want to be all the time.

I often wonder what the difference is. What is so different about me when I’m on vacation? Why do I feel more like my best self when away?

An easy answer would be that on vacation I’m not working, am seeing some fantastic places, and am usually in a warm destination. But I’m not independently wealthy. I need my 9 to 5. And while yes, I do work remotely, we aren’t going to pick up and move to another country any time soon. We’ve explored it believe me. πŸ™‚

So how can I live a life you don’t need a vacation from?

Maybe it’s not about escaping something but about taking a good look at myself and changing my normal. Maybe it’s about learning who Vacation Tammy is and being her no matter my circumstances.

Join me as I learn to change my normal one trip at a time.

  1. This is a very interesting post. I’ve had the same thoughts myself. When on holidays, you are seeing and learning new things daily. Often we are at our most active too, as opposed to sitting at our desk 9-5. You need to make sure this happens in your normal day to day life. Visit parts of your own town after work or on the weekends, go to a new restaurant and find another hobby after work that you can take classes in to meet new people, maybe that will help the real Tammy flourish?

  2. Oh Tammy! This really spoke to me. Figuring out how to be our best selves is something I have been working on as well.
I wonder if Vacation Tammy just loves the change from the very day?

    1. I think some of it is that yes. Some of it is that I allow myself to be free-er. It’s something I’ve thought a lot about over the years.
